Country Artist Continues His Battle With Depression: “It Will Smother Any Joy You Feel Right Into the Ground”

It’s no secret that David Nail has battling depression for more than a decade. The country singer opened up about his battle to Nash Country Daily before the birth of his twins in 2015.

“I was chronically depressed for about 10 years,” said David to NCD. “Now I go to counseling and take quite a bit of medicine, but it’s night and day, man. I had a bunch of stuff pent up for a lot of years and didn’t really know exactly why or what it was, but just being able to talk to somebody consistently who has a background in helping people—it’s remarkable.”

Today (April 20), the “Whatever She’s Got” singer posted a note on Instagram about what he’s been going through when depression hits and options for getting help to those in need.

“Depression is always in the back of my mind. It doesn’t hang around for months at a time like it used to, but it still pops up now and then. It doesn’t matter how good your life is going, or what a wonderful family you have. Someone can hand you a million dollars, and it will smother any joy you feel right into the ground. The more you try and “look at the bright side,” the worse it makes you feel. I know now, that with medicine and therapy, I’ll eventually wake up one day soon without the weight of it wearing me down. But when you’re in the middle of the storm, It can make you feel as bad as you’ve ever felt. Much like a drug addict, I know I’ll deal with this the rest of my life. There are far more good days than bad, but when the bad ones do come, they can paralyze. If you ever find yourself feeling this way, know there are so many helpful options you can seek out. And while you won’t ever be “cured,” you’re quality of life will greatly increase. DN”
